Canyon Tank Duel is a fun Public Domain party duel game for 1 or 2 players. This game was developed in November 2024-February 2025 as part of a public domain game coding tutorial feature for Lemon 64.

Canyon Tank duel consists of the following:

  • Front end presentation with in game options
  • Duel fighting against another player or the computer's tank, at the top or the bottom of the screen.
  • Atmospheric front end and game music
  • Canyon style landscape
  • Customised in game sound effects.
  • Designed for C64 gaming parties.
  • Compatible with PAL / NTSC Commodore 64s, the Ultimate 64, and RGL's theC64.

HOW TO PLAY

This is a fun party game for 2 players. You can also play against the C64 or against a friend. The C64 does not use any form of AI and moves at random intervals.

There are two tanks based on top of the canyon. They can either be controlled by a player or the computer.

Player 1 controls a green tank at the top of the screen. The tank can be controlled using a joystick in port 2.

Player 2 controls a blue tank at the bottom of the screen. The tank can be controlled using a joystick in port 1.

You should also bear in mind that when playing against the computer, the correct joystick port must be used based on the player if it is not being controlled by the computer. The tank which is controlled by the computer fires rapidly and moves at random.

The object of this game is to fight against your opponent. You can use left or right on your joystick to move your tank the proposed direction.  Pressing fire will shoot your weapon.

If the weapon hits the enemy tank (or vice-versa) the power energy counter will reduce. After the energy counter is empty, one more shot will kill the opponent (or perhaps you).

After a tank has been destroyed, the player (or computer) that destroys the enemywill score 1 win point. The overall winner is declared after the maximum number of win points has been reached.

There is help at hand for both tanks. There is a drone hovering above the canyon dispatching parachutes that contain power ups. The power ups will either head towards the top of the screen or the bottom of the screen. It is up to you to decide whether or not to pick up the power up.

THE POWER UPS

The power ups are colour coded and they are as follows:

Pink: Default shells - Inflicts 1 x damage against to opponent if hit.
Orange: Double shells - Inflicts 2 x damage against the opponent if hit.
Red: Green missile - Inflicts 3 x damage against the opponent if hit.
Green: Faster tank for a short time.
Blue: Freeze your enemy tank for a short time.
Cyan: Freeze your tank for a short time.

May the best tank win. Good luck!

Install instructions

First of all, download the zip archive from your workstation. As soon as you have downloaded the zip file, extract it to a desired location on your workstation, a USB stick or SD card. This game was built to play on the Commodore 64, but it can also be played in VICE, CCS64, Hoxs64 or Denise in C64 mode on your workstation or mobile/tablet.

The D64 version of Canyon Tank Duel also contains the program files and native C64 source code, you will need Turbo Macro Pro and at least 516K extra RAM. Although it is possible to assemble and run the project using a standard Turbo Assembler. It is recommended that you check out the tutorial that is available on lemon64.com in the help page.

The tape version contains the standalone game, for nostalgic tape fans who (like myself) like to insert a tape and watch those loading bars take action while loading in your game.
