Race 'N Smash is a small but fun vertical scrolling racing game, which was developed as part of the "Fun and Games Programming in Assembly" tutorial, run by Lemon 64. This was the start of introducing the C64 community on programming games using a native Commodore 64 assembler (Turbo Assembler).

Race 'N Smash features the following content:

  • Fully presentable front end
  • A smooth vertical scrolling road
  • Two different upbeat driving sound tracks
  • Eight levels of increased difficulty
  • Hi score detection
  • Plenty of car dodging action
  • Compatible with a PAL Commodore 64, theC64, Ultimate 64, and RGL's theC64. Due to the way the raster code has been handled, this game is not compatible with NTSC systems.

HOW TO PLAY

This is a high score attack challenge game for 1 player only.

The object of Race 'N Smash is to safely guide your car on the highway and overtake as many cars as you possibly can in order to add points to your score. You will score 100 points for every car you pass. The game ends when you crash into another car.

During game play, the game runs secretly on a timer. After the timer has expired, you will move onto the next level, which will get much harder with the speed of the game play increasing. After your have reached level 8 of the game, the game is set to its maximum speed.

CONTROLS:

Use a joystick in port 2

UP = Move car up
DOWN = Move car down
LEFT = Move car left
RIGHT = Move car right

Install instructions

First of all, download the zip archive from your workstation. As soon as you have downloaded the zip file, extract it to a desired location on your workstation, a USB stick or SD card. This game was built to play on the Commodore 64, but it can also be played in VICECCS64Hoxs64 or Denise in C64 mode on your workstation or mobile/tablet

There are two different D64 versions of Race 'N Smash. One of the D64s contain the stanalone game, and another D64 contains the program files and native C64 source code, you will need Turbo Assembler or Turbo Macro Pro in order to view the source code. It is recommended that you check out the tutorial that is available on lemon64.com in the help page to help get you started.

The tape version contains the standalone game, for nostalgic tape fans who (like myself) like to insert a tape and experience the old fashioned tape loading experience. All complete with loading bars and a an uptempo loading tune.
